The name alcohol (RH70) refers to only a few substance,  the ethyl  alcohol  found in intoxicating beverages, the  iso  propyl alcohol  found  in  the medicine cabinet, and  the  wood  alcohol (methanol) used as a solvent for shellac. The tenth of the matter is  that  the  alcohol  are a  very  large  class  of  compounds, exhibiting  a rich and diverse chemical behavior. A wide  variety of  naturally occurring alcohols have been identified, from  both plant and animal sources. The fermentation of sugar and starch by yeast  or  bacteria  is an important source  of  ethanol  and  1-butanol.  However,  many alcohol that are not  found  in  natural source,  or are present only in small amounts can be prepared  by transformation  of  other  functional groups.  Examples  of  such syntheses include the hydrolysis of alkyl halides.
