Nickel is usually divalent in its compounds; it shows only a feeble  tendency to assume univalent, trivalent, and  tetravalent states  and  such  ions  are  not  stable  in  aqueous  solution.  Compounds  of divalent nickel closely resemble those of  divalent cobalt.    Many  nickel compounds are prepared  from  the  oxide, hydroxide,  or carbonate.  They are yellow in the anhydrous  form and  green  when hydrated or in solution.  Nickel  compounds  are used manly in the production of nickel catalysts, electroplating, enamels and storage batteries.  Nickel compounds are produced  in India  on  a commercial scale by a few firms located  in  Mumbai, Punjab  and West Bengal.  As no workable deposits of nickel  have so  far been located in the country, nickel pellet (Ni,  99-100%)
are  imported  for use as starting material.   Nickel  scrap  and Nickel anode waste are also used to some extent.
