         The  genus  includes  about 48 species,  of  which  C.Papaya (carica)  is the most important and best known. It is  cultivated newly all over the tropical and sub-tropical regions of the World for  its luscious fruits. It is the source of commercial  papain. Among the other species, C. Candamarcensis and C. quereitolia are of  some importance as possible breeding materials  for  inducing frost – resistance in cultivated papaya.
Varieties

`Washington’,  `Honey Dew’ (Madhu Bindu) `Coorg Honey  Dew’, `Singapore’ C.O.I. an improved strain of the Ranchi type has been evolved at Coimbatore. The varieties do not remain pure under the existing  state of cultivation and give rise to variations,  both in tree and fruit characteristics.

Their  demand  is  increasing  considerably  and  they   have prosperous future prospects.
