Indian manufacturers are currently producing fruit crops, forest trees, ornamental (foliage plants, flowering plants),vegetable crops and plantation crops. An analysis of plants micropropagated by Indian industry shows that ornamental plants are the major items being produced, in line with the international trend. The Indian manufacturers are mainly producing plants for export purpose under buy-back arrangements and are at a disadvantage when compared to direct entry in overseas outlets. There is a considerable increase in the demand of micro propagated plants in the Indian market. The production target of industry for domestic market has increased from 15% to 50% of the total volume. In recent years, there has been an explosion in the number of commercial plant tissue culture (TC) units in India. More than 30 companies have production capacity of 3 to 6 million plants per annum. Almost all units are export oriented, but the target crops are the same. Indoor foliage plants dominate the export market. Micropropagation industry in India is providing major support to Indian agriculture in four crop groups: Fruits, ornamentals, spices, forestry/plantation crops. Banana is the largest selling TC fruit crop. TC papaya plants are now marketed for extraction and processing of papain. TC anthuriums, orchids, and gerberas have attained commercial importance. TC rose plants are used as pot plants. Nearly 600 ha are under TC cardamom cultivation in southern India recording 25% to 35% increase in yield. Vanilla cultivation is expected to increase from the existing 55 ha to more than 475 ha in the coming years using TC plants. There is a good export potential of tissue culture and having good future in export and in India. New entrepreneurs can well venture into this trade.
