HDPE Barrels are the important Packaging Material for packaging of Chemicals, solvents Pharmaceuticals Pesticide etc.

A plastic drum is a spherical barrel moulded from industrial-grade plastic. They’re commonly coloured blue for easy identification, and are designed for storage and/or transport of industrial goods.

Plastic drums are produced from a material known as HDPE, which stands for High-Density Polyethylene. It’s an incredibly malleable, yet rigid material that can withstand high temperatures and many hazardous chemicals.

Drums are produced in a wide range of sizes, which allows them to meet different industrial needs on both a small and large scale. Plastic drums generally range in size from small 30-litre barrels up to large 220-litre barrels.

Smaller plastic drums have black handles on the side, allowing them to be moved and lifted by hand. Larger plastic drums can be easily moved using forklifts.

There are two primary types of plastic drums used for industrial packaging. These are known as open head or tight head plastic drums.

Open Head Plastic Drums

Open head plastic drums have a removable lid on the top end of the barrel. This lid makes it easy to pour contents into the drum and to remove them again later.

Open head plastic drums are sealed shut using steel clamps, or can be left in storage with no lid attached and the contents open.

Tight Head Plastic Drums

Tight head plastic drums are similar to closed head drums in many ways. The main difference is that tight head plastic drums are sealed on both ends. There is no removable lid.

Instead, tight head drums are filled or emptied using a nozzle or bung. So although it’s more difficult to fill a tight head barrel up, it’s much more secure.

What Can You Store In A Plastic Drum?

Plastic drums can be used to store a wide array of different industrial goods. The most common include the following:

• Chemicals
• Solvents
• Pharmaceuticals
• Liquids
• Oils and lubricants
• Grains
• Food ingredients
• Sand
Their versatility and durability ensure that plastic drums are popular for both storage and transport. Because they are available in a range of sizes, they can be also used in an industrial capacity.

Plastic drums are reusable, but you need to ensure that they’re cleaned out before and after each use if you are going to be storing different goods in them.

High-density polyethylene (HDPE) is a polyethylene thermoplastic made from petroleum. It is known for its large strength-to-density ratio. The density of HDPE can range from 0.93 to 0.97g/cm3 or 970Kg/m3. The difference in strength exceeds the difference in density, giving HDPE a higher specific strength. It is also harder and more opaque and can withstand much higher temperatures (120°C for short periods, 110°C continuously). High-density polyethylene, unlike polypropylene, cannot withstand normally required autoclaving conditions. The lack of branching is ensured by an appropriate choice of catalyst (e.g., Ziegler-Natta catalysts) and reaction conditions.

HDPE pipes are important plastic products which have wide range of applications. These have more tensile strength in comparison to other plastic pipes. These are being used for Sprinkler Irrigation System, potable water supply and sewerage purpose. Their low cost, easily installation and better durability make them ideal for the purpose. They also offer very good resistance to most of the chemicals and have excellent electrical insulation properties. These pipes are also used for circulation of acids in various chemical industries due to their acid resistant quality.

The demands of HDPE Pipes are likely to increase due to their wide use in various sectors in India. Apart from its regular uses, such as for irrigation system, water supply, sewerage, it is being used by Department of Telecommunication for conduit for optical fiber cables. Looking to its increased demand, it appears to be good scope for setting up new small scale industries. Hence the product has good market potential.

CLASSIFICATION

(A) Pipes shall be classified according to the grade of materials as MRS; Polyethylene pipes and classified by the raw materials used in the production of attachments. MRS material strength values of 20°C are also shown by the internal pressure for 50 years.

Raw material class MRS(MPa) value
PE 63 6.3
PE 80 8.0
PE 100 10

(B) Pipes by pressure rating (PN) corresponding to the maximum shall be classified permissible working pressure at 3WC, as follows:

The pressure grades available according to European standards are:
• PN 2.5 - max pressure 2.5 bar
• PN 4 - max pressure 4 bar
• PN 6 - max pressure 6 bar
• PN 10 - max pressure 10 bar
• PN 16 - max pressure 16 bar

Color codes used to indicate the pressure grades on the pipes are:

Double Wall Corrugated (DWC) HDPE pipes are similar to normal HDPE pipes except that they have different external & internal surfaces which gives them additional strength and stiffness. These are made with High Density Polyethylene which has very high life expectancy. These are externally corrugated and have smooth surface inside and are available from 75 mm to 1.0 m dia. These pipes are light weight and can be used for non-pressure underground sewerage, drainage & cross drainage (pipe culvert) including rain water harvesting purposes. They are maintenance free and therefore, once installed, will lie underground for years.

Provision of drinking water supply, or in other words `piped' water supply to urban and rural population, constitutes an important aspect of developmental programmes in many countries. Among several materials for pipes and fittings, plastics, though of recent origin, have offered vast potentialities both economical and technical, for exploitation by the engineers, architects and builders of the plastic materials, polyethylene (low and high density) and unplasticized PVC (rigid PVC) have been the prime contender, though to a fairly smaller extent, polypropylene and ABS have made their appearance in this field. A whole range of sanitary fittings and fixtures viz, taps, showers, gratings, basin and sink wastes, waste traps, float balls and valves, syphons for flushing cystems, are also currently available in the market, moulded in different suitable plastics.

whole range of sanitary fittings and fixtures viz, taps, showers, gratings, basin and sink wastes, waste traps, float balls and valves, syphons for flushing cystems, are also currently available in the market, moulded in different suitable plastics.

Today, more PVC Pipes are being used than any other pipe product.

Characteristics

PVC is a thermosetting plastic. In other words, it can only be softened and molded into form once. If it is softened and remolded a second time it will lose some of it's favorable characteristics. Recently, 'Fuseable PVC' has come to market to compete with the fuseable properties of HDPE Pipe.

A tangle of monofilament fishing line. The most common colorless variety can be seen. Monofilament fishing line (shortened to just monofilament) is fishing line made from a single fiber of plastic. Most fishing lines are now monofilament because monofilament fibers are cheap to produce and are produced in a range of diameters which have different tensile strengths (called "tests" after the process of tensile testing). Monofilament line is also manufactured in different colors, such as clear, white, green, blue, red, and fluorescent.

With their many advantages over conventional materials, plastics have revolutionzed modern engineering, unlike steel and copper, plastic materials do not corrode, are much lighter and cost less.

This is particularly descriptive of HDPE/LDPE pipeline systems, now used extensively in Europe. The USA and Japan for conveying water, corrosive liquids, waste and effluents, per form better at lower cost.

The resistance of Polyethylene pipes and fittings to various chemicals is shown in the following table.

Following are the bulk consumers of HDPE/LDPE pipes and fittings in India.

1. Central public works departments.
2. State public works departments.
3. Housing Boards
4. Urban development authority like DDA,
5. M.E.S.
6. Municipal Boards

These hdpe pipes and fittings have a high degree of Corrosion resitance, are light in weight. Yet tough and durable, Have excellent, hydraulic properties, excellent thermal Properties, weatherability. As such law & high density pipes Are various fields viz. Agriculture industry.
