Annatto is a spice and a natural color that is derived from the achiote shrub. Annatto is popularly used as a food color and dye, but at the same time, it is also is a good flavor enhancer. There is a great demand of this product. It has a beautiful red color which is helpful in bringing red and orange colors to number of recipes. It comes from the achiote seeds which is a heart shaped, red fruit with spines. Annatto extract is derived from the achiote seeds that come out when the ripe achiote fruit bursts into two. Annatto is also laden with multiple medicinal properties and is therefore used majorly in cooking and other culinary practices.

Annatto extract available in many forms. May be a powder, paste, oil or as a chunk. Apart from this, the annatto seeds may also be used in food for culinary enhancements and flavouring. The procedure to make any of them is a little time taking as well as tedious.

If annatto seeds are being used as it is, it is not really tough. The seeds have a coating of an oily paste that contains bixin. Bixin is a yellow orange carotenoid. It is extracted using aqueous alkaline solution and vegetable oil solvent. Vegetable oil solvent gives oil soluble bixin, Alkaline solution gives water soluble norbixin and Propyline Glycol yields a combination.

The increasing pressure of population on the available land resources, necessitates higher agricultural productivity, which can be achieved through more intensive use of fertilizer nutrients. Fertilizer is generally defined as any material (organic or inorganic; natural or synthetic) which supplies one or more of the essential chemical elements to the plants. Broadly, sixteen elements have been identified as necessary for plant growth, of which nine are required in macro quantities and seven in micro quantities.

Aloe barbadensis Mill, popularly known as Aloe vera originated in the warm, dry climates of Africa. However, because of its wide adaptability as well as its importance as medicinal plants, it is well distributed. The virtues of the plant have been recorded by many great civilizations, from those of Persia and Egypt in the Middle East, to those of Greece and Italy in Europe, to those of India and the African continent. The plant is widely known in Asia and the Pacific, and is found in the folklore of the Japanese, the Philippines and the Hawaiians. The Spanish used Aloe, and carried it with them to their new world colonies in South America and the Caribbean. In each age, on each continent, in each culture. Aloe vera has drawn the attention of the most sophisticated minds. In India, it is grown commercially for its high demand in cosmetic industries as well as in Indian System of Medicines. The succulent leaves are economic part of this plant. Aloe is know by several names in India such as Ghrit Kumari, Kunvar pathu and Indian Aloe.
