Development of particle and fibre board has been consequential to man's quest for optimum utilization of timber and wood wastes which earlier were used mainly as fuel.

Initial development of particle board took place in Germany during the Second World War when its timber supplies were practically cut-off from the supplying countries. Particle board plants were set up in postwar West Germany to meet the demand for reconstruction. In the fifties particle board manufacturing plants were set up in Europe and USA. The industry has now developed throughout the world.
