Nowadays, PET bottles are the global number one in beverage packaging. More than 400 billion plastic bottles come on the market every year and PET is becoming increasingly valuable as a recyclable raw material used in the production of beverage bottles. Thus, it is important that all of the production steps applied for the manufacture of your PET bottles are made sustainable for the future.

The gentle treatment of resources and economical use of materials are a must when it comes to sustainable production. Valuable raw materials such as PET must be processed as efficiently as possible while still tapping into every way of saving costs. The PET manufacturing and production process allows for the application of a sustainable approach which can optimally combine environmental awareness and cost effectiveness: the bottle-to-bottle recycling concept.

Bottle-to-bottle recycling plant efficiently recycles used PET bottles - and the recyclate is then reused in the food and beverage industry as recycled PET (rPET). The complete process comprises the cleaning of the used PET bottles and the treatment of the recyclate so that the end product - which could come in the form of flakes, pellets or preforms - can meet the highest quality requirements after the recycling process. European and American certificates (e.g. FDA), and a number of different corporate approvals, all confirm the high quality of the recyclate for direct use in containers which come into direct contact with foodstuffs.

Stretch wrap or stretch film is a highly stretchable plastic film that is wrapped around items. The elastic recovery keeps the items tightly bound. In contrast, shrink wrap is applied loosely around an item and shrinks tightly with heat.

It is frequently used to unitize pallet loads but also may be used for bundling smaller items. Types of stretch film include bundling stretch film, hand stretch film, extended core stretch film, machine stretch film and static dissipative film.

The most common stretch wrap material linear low-density polyethylene or LLDPE, which is produced by copolymerization of ethylene with alpha-olefins, the most common of which are butene, hexene and octene. The use of higher alpha-olefins (hexene or octene) gives rise to enhanced stretch film characteristics, particularly in respect of elongation at break and puncture resistance. Other types of polyethylene and PVC can also be used. Many films have about 500% stretch at break but are only stretched to about 100 – 300% in use. Once stretched, the elastic recovery is used to keep the load tight.

There are two methods of producing stretch wrap. 1) Blown: the resin is melted and extruded through an annular die, it is air-cooled. This is a slower process but provides for higher quality in all the areas listed below. The cost of production is also higher due to the quantity that can be produced per hour. 2) Cast: the film is extruded through a slot die, and then passed over cooling rollers. This makes the cooling process quick. The quality is not as good as blown but more can be produced in an hour with lower costs.

PET (also named PETE) is a kind of polyester material for fibres, injection molded parts, as well as blow-molded bottles and jars. Special grades are offered with the required properties for the different applications.

PET is linear thermoplastic (long-chain molecule consists of repeating units shown as figure right), white but bluish resin made from terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol through poly-condensation. PET is supplied by the resin manufacturers in the form of small pellets, each about 0.05 grams. PET came into prominence in the 1950s as a textile material. Its strength, temperature tolerance and wear-resistance made it an ideal replacement for, or addition to natural fibres such as silk, cotton and wool.
