The lubrication of the wire during passage through the die plays an important role, particularly with regard to lessening the amount of die wear. The subsequently applied lubricants for wire drawing may be dry soap (with a calcium stearate or sodium stearate base) or an oil with Extreame Pressure (E.P) additives. E.P. additives are chemicals which react with hot spots on the wire surface that result from lubricants breakdown. The resulting local surface compound has a low shear strength and functions as
a provisional lubricant.
