Agar  Agar  is chemically known as “Agar”. It  is  a  phyco-colloid  derived from red algae such as Geladium and  Gracilaria. It is a polysaccwaride mixture of agarose and agaropectin. It is available in three grades viz. Technical, USP, FCC.

Agar is extracted from certain marine algae belonging to the class  Rhodophyceae, red seaweed. According to legend, agar was first discovered in the middle of the seventeenth  century  in Japan,  and  has  been  manufactured  since  the  middle  of  the nineteenth  century.  Today,  it is  produced  in  Japan,  Spain, Taiwan,  Republic of Korea, Morocco, Chile, and Portugal, and  by one manufacturer in the United State.
