The name alcohol (RH70) refers to only a few substance, the ethyl alcohol found in intoxicating beverages, the iso propyl alcohol found in the medicine cabinet, and the wood alcohol (methanol) used as a solvent for shellac. The tenth of the matter is that the alcohol are a very large class of compounds, exhibiting a rich and diverse chemical behavior. A wide variety of naturally occurring alcohols have been identified, from both plant and animal sources. The fermentation of sugar and starch by yeast or bacteria is an important source of ethanol and 1-butanol. However, many alcohol that are not found in natural source, or are present only in small amounts can be prepared by transformation of other functional groups. Examples of such syntheses include the hydrolysis of alkyl halides.
