Straight chain primary, secondary and tertiary amines with chain lengths between 8 and 24 carbon atoms are commonly known as fatty amines. A fatty amine is a normal aliphatic amine derived from fats and oils. It may be saturated or unsaturated. The alkyl groups are straight-chain and have an even number of carbon atoms in each.
The group of fatty amines also includes derivatives such as N-alkyl-1, 3-propane diamines. Of commercial importance are fatty amine mixtures, such as coco amine, tallow amine, hydrogenated-tallow amine, oleylamine, and soya amine, which are derived from naturally occurring fatty acids. More recently, alkyl-amines of similar structure were produced from synthetic feed stocks, e.g., olefins or paraffins, and these also are called fatty amines (beta-amines, branched-chain amines, aminoalkanols).
