Cork is one of the few naturally grown closed-cell foams that have never been duplicated will synthetic material. It has been an item of commerce for at least 2500 years and was used by the early greeks for shoes, floats and stoppers. As referred to in this article, cork is the outer bark at the cork oak. Quercus suber, which grows mainluy near the Mediterranian Sea on the Iberian Peninsula and along the shores of North Africa. The cork oak is unique in that the outer bark of cork or the phellem can be stripped from most of the tree trunk and major limbs without harming the tree. Furthermore, the cork bark undergoes rejuvenation and can be stripped repeatedly tree reaches intervals. The harvest starts when a new tree reaches maturity (20-25yrs) and the first or vergin and made every nine years. The stripped cork bark is steamed, cleaned, graded and baled for marketing the yield for tree ranges from 15-100 kg. Mature trees of in trunk circumference and 10-20 m in height. Many countries have tagged and registered each cork oak and have established laws to project the trees from being cut for firewood, lumber or other.
