Capsicum in its various colours is one of the most popular vegetables in Europe, America and Middle East. Production of capsicums so far is mostly confined to a few European nations with Spain, Italy and Netherlands in the lead. The major importers of capsicums in its red and yellow hues are Germany, Netherlands, UK and Middle East countries.
In India, cultivation of flowers and vegetables under green house is of recent origin. Presently, most of the units are centred on production of cut-flowers for export and hybrid vegetables seed production. However, for the last two years, about 70 to 80 small scale units ranging from 500 sq. meters to 8000 sq meters green house area have come up around Sangli and Kolhapur districts of Maharashtra for production of coloured capsicum. Most Of these units are found to be doing well both in production and marketing.
