A  transformer is a device which transfers energy in an  a-c system  from  one circuit to another.  With its  two  independent electric  circuit  linked to a common magnetic  circuit,  it  can transform energy at low voltage to energy at high voltage or vice versa  in  a voltage transformer.  Similarly current of  a  given value  in one circuit may be trnasformed into current of  another value in the second circuit by a current transfomer.
Primary  winding of a transfomer is connected to the  supply circuit or mains while the secondary circuit is connected to  the receiver  circuits  have  star connections for  both   primary  & secondary  winding  and the third winding is delta-connected   in the group and is known as stabilizing winding.  Transformers with more  than one primary or secondary winding are termed as  three-winding, four winding transformers.
