Production of dry cells in the United States began about 1890 at this early stage in their history they found use in laboratories & to a some extent for operation of toys later public made greatly increased use of them for ringing door bells and operating annuciator system. The development of internal combustion engines opened a new field for dry cell as a source of ignition on automotive equipment but this promising application as the magnetol modern starting and lighting systems came into use. Dry cell operated telephone at one time provided the largest single use for dry cells. This too has decreased but it is still important . Flash light which need smaller size of still important. Radio Broadcasting in the early twenties brought with it a sudden & great demand for both dry & storage batteries to operate home & portable operating sets.
