Ethyl acetate also called as acetic ether, acetic ester  and vinegar   naphtha  is  chemically  represented  by  the   formula CH3COOC2H5.  It is a colorless fragrant  liquid  having  density 0.8945 g/ml (25oC).  Ethyl acetate  is derived by heating  Acetic Acid  &  Ethyl   alcohol  in  presence  of  sulphuric  acid   and distilling.  India has been a world pioneer in the field  of alcohol  based  chemical  industries.  The  growth   of   alcohol industry  in India was in 3 distinct phases.  The period  1937-47 was  an  exploratory phase into the industrial  possibilities  of rectified spirit. Growth of distilleries marked the second  phase (1947-62)  when the mainstay of the Industry was the  offtake  of power   alcohol   in  India  is  used  for industrial purposes particularly  in the manufacture of acetone, acetaldehyde  acetic acid, butanol, vinyl chloride and ethylacetate. Alcohol has  been an important industrial raw material and more attention has  come to be focused on alcohol in recent days.

Ethyl  acetate requirement as general solvent  in  coatings, plastics  organic  synthesis, and  manufacture of smokeless powders, pharmaceuticals  have  made  the chemical valuable product.  Various grades of Ethyl Acetate are marketed.  The anhydrous compound B.P 76-77oC is 99% purity and is  inexpensive and  suitable  for  most  purposes.  The 95-98% grade   usually containing some water, ethyl alcohol and acetic acid and may be fractional distillation.
