A gel is a colloidal disperse system in which is contained a dispersed component and a disperson medium, both extending continuously throughout the system. The gel will support a static shear stress and undergo permanent determation. Thus, since they have a shear modulus of rigidity, gels are like sowds, but in most opher physical respects they behave like liquids. It is proposed that a gel has a three- dimensional network kept together by bonds or junction points which essentially have an unlimited lifetime. A gel may be defined as a flocculant and gelatious precipitate. A jelly is a transparent elastic mass.
Upon standing, a gel may shrink a process known as syneresis.
Sometimes a colloidal system that resembles a liquid is termed a gel whereas gel is applied to system that resemble a solid, jelly like substance. Where water is one component, such systems may be termed hydrosols and hydrogels, respectivel. The reversible transformation of soles intogela, and vice versa, are termed solation and gelation.
