Jewelry, objects of personal adornment prized for the craftsmanship going into their creation and generally for the value of their components as well.

Chemically, noble metals resist oxidation and corrosion in moist air. They also possess varying degrees of resistance to acids. This group includes the following elements: ruthenium, rhodium, palladium, osmium, iridium, gold, silver, and platinum.

In addition to noble metal properties, gold, silver, and platinum posses the following characteristics: These metals occur worldwide, but not in large enough quantities to render them less valuable. They’re considered precious metals and have been used as currency (a store of value). Many cultures, historically and currently, consider these metals beautiful, sensuous, and glamorous, which increases their appeal.

These metals also possess malleability, which makes them practical choices for jewelry making. For all these reasons, the trio of gold, silver, and platinum continue to enjoy considerable popularity as jewelry metals.

Jewelry is a personal ornament, such as a ring, bracelet, necklace or any other item made from jewels, precious metals or any other material. The word ‘jewelry’ is derived from the Latin word ‘jocale’, which means plaything. In the language of today, the word jewelry is used to describe any piece of precious metal or gemstone used to adorn oneself. Jewelry has fascinated, thrilled and impressed the world for thousands of years and played an important role in growth of human civilization. Jewelry is one of the oldest forms of body adornment and was in use before clothing came into existence.

In primitive times, jewelry was created from natural materials, such as bone, animal teeth, shell, wood, and carved stone. After the discovery and extraction of minerals and metals, jewelry has been created by setting sparkling gemstones into precious metals. These minerals and metals are extracted in a rough state and usually require some treatment before their use in jewelry. Gemstones are cut and polished to exhibit their sparkle, whereas alloys are mixed in with metals to make them strong and colorful.

Throughout the centuries and from culture to culture, the materials considered rare and beautiful have ranged from shells, bones, pebbles, tusks, claws, and wood to so-called precious metals, precious and semiprecious stones, pearls, corals, enamels, vitreous pastes, and ceramics. In certain eras artist-craftsmen have sometimes placed less emphasis on the intrinsic value of materials than on their aesthetic function as components contributing to the effect of the whole. Thus, they might fashion a brooch out of steel or plastic rather than gold or platinum. Furthermore, in addition to its decorative function, during much of its history jewelry has also been worn as a sign of social rank—forbidden by sumptuary laws to all but the ruling classes—and as a talisman to avert evil and bring good luck. During the Middle Ages, for example, a ruby ring was thought to bring its owner lands and titles, to bestow virtue, to protect against seduction, and to prevent effervescence in water—but only if worn on the left hand.

Jewelry is made to adorn nearly every body part from head to toe. Since ancient times, it has been used for different reasons and purposes within different cultures and periods.
