The  Jute  Industry is an ancient industry  of  Bengal.   Of course  the word `Jute’ was mentioned in none of the  publication before  1796.   At  the  time  of  the  East  India  Company  the manufacture  was  carried out in an extensive  scale.   In  1838, increasing  exports of Jute goods from Bengal drew the  attention of   the  linen  manufacturers  of  Dundel.    After   successful experiments,  they began to manufacture Jute goods like  Bags  on yearly increasing quantities for home use as well as for  export.  The  short supply and high price of flax forced dundel to  depend more  on Jute.  Thus the Jute Industry of Dundel secured a  solid footing   and   began  to  make  rapid  progress.    The   Dundel manufacturers  thought  of the possibility  of  transferring  the manufacturing centre from Dundle to Bengal for effecting  economy in  the  Industry.
