LEDs  were first developed in the 1920s, but they  were  not introduced  as  electronic components until 1962.  In  1968,  red LEDs, suitable for indicator lights and displays for electronics, were  developed and marketed. The ability to produce  high  power white light with LEDs is more recent and this technology is still evolving in a highly competitive market.

LEDs can replace incandescent and fluoresent lamps in  some, but   not  all,  applications.  LEDs  are  used  in   residential applications primarily as accent and spot lighting, under-cabinet lighting, outdoor lighting, and other places where focused rather than  diffuse light is appropriate. The U.S.Department of  Energy lists  the following approved applications of LEDs is its  ENERGY STAR LED lighting program (as of January 4,2010).
