Malachite green is most commonly known for its use in the dye industry, but it is also used as a therapeutic agent for fish. A National Occupational Exposure Survey, conducted between 1981 and 1983 by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, estimated that > 180,000 workers are potentially exposed to this dye. The potential for consumer exposure exists most notably through its use as an antifungal agent in commercial fish hatcheries. With the exception of a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service investigational new animal drug exemption for treating specific threatened aquatic species, malachite green is not approved for use on any aquatic species by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) or the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
