Paper is a felted well, faleric or tissue usually of cellulose fibres used for writing upon or for wapping articles. It derives its name from papyrus’, a tall reed cyperus papy rees linn, cultivated in ancient times in egypt and used for making writing material. Paper making is reported to be a chinese invention dating back to 150 A.D. and the first paper sheets were
produced from mublerry bark. It was introduced into europe by aralies towards the middle of the twelfth century. Paper making is reported to have been introduced into India at the time of Muslim invasion and it gained a good footing in Kashmir and Punjab and subsequentlyu spread to Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, U.P., Bihar, Bengal, Mysore and Chennai. Primitive method employed was to pulp the filerous material flax or rag with water prepare a diluted stock and lift a portion over a wive mesh to remove superfluous water and leave a thin, even layer of fetted on the mesh; the well was dried and finished into a sheet. The process of making paper was improved upon gradually over centuries and a process for producing continuous sheets was developed in 1799 and the Foundrinier machine was introduced in 1804; the cylinder machine came into use soon after. The bulk of manufactured paper is used for writing and for printing of books, periodicals and newspaper.
