Nickel is usually divalent in its compounds; it shows only a feeble tendency to assume univalent, trivalent and tetravalent states and such ions are not stable in aqueous solution. Compounds of divalent nickel closely resemble those of divalent cobalt. Many nickel compounds are prepared from the oxide, hydroxide, or carbonate. They are yellow in the anhydrous form and green when hydrated or in solution. Nickel compounds are used manly in the production of nickel catalysts, electroplating, enamels and storage batteries. Nickel compounds are produced in India on a commercial scale by a few firms located in Mumbai, Punjab and West Bengal. As no workable deposits of nickel have so far been located in the country, nickel pellet (Ni, 99-100%) are imported for use as starting material. Nickel scrap and ickel anode waste are also used to some extent.

Nickel sulphate (electrolytic grade) is produced by the reaction of sulphuric acid on nickel scrap, Nickel pellets. ‘Anode mud’ from vanaspati/vegetable factory may also be treated with sulphuric acid and treated further to get pure Nickel sulphate.

The principal use for nickel sulphate is as an electrolyte for the metal finishing application of nickel electroplating. Nickel sulphate also is used as the electrolyte for the nickel electro-refining.

This industry is a very small scale industry and therefore there is no competition from large scale industry. Due to the increasing electroplating industry and use of nickel sulphate, the demand of nickel sulphate is increasing day by day. The total capital investment is not much more, but the profit is very much acceptable. So this industry has a bright future.
