The technology of producing pearlscent pigments has passed through three stages, the original natural pearl essence was obtained from fish scoles and was expensive. Later basic lead carbonate, Bismuth oxychloride and lead hydrogen arsenate were used.
The pearlscent or nacreous pigments owe their effects to partial transmittance and partial reflection of light from the multiple coating layers. Since the layers have about the thickness of the wavelengths of visible light, some wavelengths interfere and colours are produced.
