Consists  of  mentol (not less than 50%) extens  of  menthol pinene,  limonene,  cineole,  menthone  etc.  It  is  derived  by distilling the leaves and flovering tops of the pepermint plant.

Cultivation:-

The commercial cultivation of the plants known as peppermint and  spearemint, members of the genus Mentha (Fam Labiatae),  and the extraction, processing and shipment of their oils,  includind menthl  crystals, constitute an insdustry  involving over  $  100 million in transaction each year. The mint p[lsnts are perennials yeilding aromatic oils which are increasingly importance and have indeed  long  been amongst the world’s most  valuable  flavouring
materials.  Mint  is probably the world’s  third  most  important flavour, being exceeded in popularity only by vanilla and  citrus flavours.  The oils obtained by the relatively simple process  of steam distillation, belong to a chemical class of plant  products variably  reffered  to as essential, volatile or  ethereal  oils, whose chemicl composition consists almost entirely of hydrocarbon and  oxygenated compounds known as terpenoids. The major  terpine in peppermint oil is alchohol menthol, accounting for the cooling sensation, and that in spearmint oil is ketone carvone.
