PTFE, also known as Polytetrafluoroethylene is a well-known fluoropolymer among various industries by the trade name “Teflon” by Chemours. Many of us can associate Teflon™ with cookware, most recognizable as PTFE coated pans for their nonstick release properties. Debatably, one could say the PTFE coating on nonstick cookware was developed to replace or limit the need for fatty cooking oils that affect our cholesterol. PTFE is a fluoropolymer super slippery and extremely temperature resistant, and chemically inert. These fluoropolymers have distinguished themselves as an ideal coating for numerous applications in various industries ranging from cookware to aerospace flight components. However, PTFE is not only used as a coating; it can also be manufactured into different grades. When coupled with additional additive properties to create “Modified PTFE”, or in different forms like molded parts, solid heavy gauge sheets, skived films, rods, bars, and adhesive-backed tapes. It can also be combined with different polymers to create performance manufactured products.

PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene) is an extremely versatile material used for a wide variety of applications. In the home, PTFE is better-known as the brand Teflon which offers fantastic non-stick properties. polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) as engineer materials has excellent physical and chemical properties, such as outstanding thermal stability and toughness at low temperature , low thermal conductivity, perfect insulating and dielectric properties , extremely low coefficient of friction and chemical resistance .These performances could be attributed to its composition and the structure of PTFE, which is a helical linear polymer consisting of a carbon and fluorine and carbon chain tightly surrounded by fluorine atoms acting as a protective layer. Especially in textiles, protective clothing materials were produced by using PTFE membranes and protective undergarments were constructed employing PTFE filaments.

PTFE tape is a simplistic yet highly versatile lubricating material and thread sealant. It is mainly used in ductwork and piping applications and is also known as thread seal tape and plumber’s tape.

Much like all types of professional adhesive tapes, it is usually sold pre-cut to a range of specified widths on small rolls or spools. Plumber’s seal tapes sometimes come in a plastic cover or casing, to protect and preserve the adhesive material during toolbox storage.

Essentially, plumber’s tape is a long synthetic polymer film strip which is sold on a spool. The key characteristics of PTFE include the fact that it is both hydrophobic and extremely low friction. This makes PTFE tape highly useful for many different pipework and plumbing applications.

PTFE or Teflon thread sealant tape is widely used for water and gas pipelines to prevent leakage. It is produced from PTFE powder. The packaging of the tape is done on plastic reels. Each reel normally contains 10 meters tape of 12mm width and average weight of 1 gram. The specifications of the tape vary according to customer demand and market price. There is BIS standard for the tape but mostly tape available in the market are below standard.

PTFE tape is a novel ideal sealing material. Because of its non-toxic, odorless, excellent sealing, insulation, corrosion resistance, is widely used in water treatment industry, natural gas area, chemicals field, plastics, electronics engineering and other fields.

PTFE tape adopts advanced production technology machine, good quality, and complete specifications, to meet different customer requirements of different industries.

Product has extremely excellent insulation, strong chemical stability and good sealing performance; it is widely used in mechanical, chemical, metallurgy, electric power, shipbuilding, aerospace, medicine, electronics and other industrial fields.

The main role of PTFE tape:

With 100% PTFE as raw material, it has a fine mesh expanded long fiber structure and composition of the section. Expanded teflon tape having a good toughness, high longitudinal strength, transverse easy deformation characteristics. It is ideal material for application of threads and sealing. But it cannot apply in high concentrations of oxygen or liquid oxygen contact occasions.

Most Common PTFE Tape

The most common PTFE Tape and the number one search engine suggestion is known as “PTFE Pipe thread tape” or “plumbers’ tape” which is primarily used in plumbing applications on pipes, tubes, or conduits as a lubricating seal tape to prevent water and air leakage. PTFE Thread seal tape conforms to pipe threads acting as a “gap” filler, and the non-stick PTFE properties provide lubrication to the threads allowing for ease of installation when securing fasteners. If you have used this type of PTFE tape, you have seen how far thread tape can stretch before it breaks, but have you ever wondered why? It is because PTFE thread seal tape exhibits extremely high “elongation” (remember this term, its important!). PTFE thread seal tape can be stretched to almost 50% of its initial composure, enabling the tape to wrap and conform around threaded components. A common reason why most plumbing “DIY’s” recommend using scissors to cut the tape instead of stretching or pulling the tape until it breaks. PTFE thread seal tape has the highest conformity out of all types of PTFE Tape. Almost all types of PTFE tape consist of elongation properties to improve conformability, especially when utilized in wrapping applications.

PTFE Pipe Thread Sealant Tape is used on all types of threaded fittings for passage of water potable and non-potable, most chemicals, oxygen, gas, hydraulic and high-pressure lines. PTFE Pipe Thread Tape withstands harsh temperatures (from -450F to +550F). Strong Chemical resistance. Stretches 50% without breaking.
