Although non-ferrous pipes have been used since about 2800 B.C., the production of ferrous materials in tubular form was developed much later. Iron-musket barrels were made in the 12th century and cast-iron common barrels and water pipe in the late 17th century. The use of wrought iron in tubular products began in 1825 by the conventional butt welding process and, in 1887, Besmear steel was successfully used for this purpose. The lap-welding of pipes, initially carried out by hand was mechanized in the 1840’s by means of a ball placed between the rolls of a two high mill. From then until the 1920’s lap welding was the main process used for pipes over 3 inches in diameter.
