Transmission towers are defined as long and tall structures, generally a steel lattice tower, primarily used to provide support the overhead power line. They are preferably applied in high voltage AC and DC systems, which usually comes in a various variety of shapes and sizes. Its general height is approximately 20 to 60 metres. Atleast 700 feet distance should be maintained for proper functioning of tower and for safety concern of the general public, however distance can be reduced as per voltage of the tower.
The transmission line towers are usually light structures and have the maximum wind pressure which is the main criterion for their design. The concurrence of earthquakes and cruel wind pressures may also be considered in the earth quake – prone areas for design of the overhead transmission line towers. These towers are fabricated by means of bolted joints only. The structural steels of well specified quality only are used in construction of transmission line towers to ensure the permissible stresses and other design details. Practices followed in material selection, design, fabrication, testing and must suit the field conditions of this country.
