Early accounts of inks, even including the olderr patents, are remarkble in being purely qualitative. Putting the final touches to an ink was evidently regarded as more of an art than a craft, and so it continued well into the machine age. During the last century, ink formulation has become more and more precise with reference to raw materials, but although ink making had become an industry in its own right, separate from printing, the ink formulae of this period still left the printer to make considerrable adjustments.
The rise of printing ink making as a large scale modern industry is a post-World War II event which has demanded a scientifically baded technology .
