An air conditioner is a machine which keeps the air in a building cool and dry.

The purpose of an air conditioner is to maintain a comfortable indoor environment. The comfort we are used is to determined by a combination of 3 factors.

• Temperature
• Humidity
• Air Distribution

For this reason, the main purposes of air conditioners are to:

• Control room temperatures (cooling/heating).
• Control room humidity levels (drying, humidifying).
• Optimise air flow (circulation, distribution).
• Clean the air (filtration)

Working principle

An air conditioner collects hot air from a given space, processes it within itself with the help of a refrigerant and a bunch of coils and then releases cool air into the same space where the hot air had originally been collected. This is essentially how all air conditioners work.

Many folks believe that an air conditioner produces chilled air with the help of machines installed inside it, allowing it to cool a room so quickly. That might also explain why it consumes so much electricity. In reality, however, that’s a misconception. An air conditioner is not a magical device; it just uses some physical and chemical phenomena very effectively to cool a given space.

When you switch an AC on and set your desired temperature (say, 20 degrees Celsius), the thermostat installed in it senses that there is a difference in the temperature of the room’s air and the temperature that you’ve chosen.

A thermostat constantly monitors the temperature of the system so that it’s maintained near a user’s desired point.

This warm air is drawn in through a grille at the base of the indoor unit, which then flows over some pipes through which the refrigerant (i.e., a coolant fluid) is flowing. The refrigerant liquid absorbs the heat and becomes a hot gas itself. This is how heat is removed from the air that falls on the evaporator coils. Note that the evaporator coil not only absorbs heat, but also wrings out moisture from the incoming air, which helps to dehumidify the room.

This hot refrigerant gas is then passed on to the compressor (located on the outside unit). Being true to its name, the compressor compresses the gas so that it becomes hot, since compressing a gas increases its temperature.

This hot, high-pressure gas then travels to the third component – the condenser. Again, the condenser remains true to its name, and condenses the hot gas so that it becomes a liquid.

In the manufacture of inner tubes the plant required is fairly simple and inexpensive, the principal outlay being for wrapping machines and mandrils. It is essentially a trade which can be embarked upon in a large way. It is necessary to go in for the business thoroughly if it is desired to compete with established manufacturers, who turn out thousands of tubes per week. The work should be so arranged that the various process
are continuous, as it is only by this method that the lowest labour costs can be obtained. The operators are cutting strips from sheet, building up on the mandrils, wrapping, vulcanizing, stripping, bevelling, fitting valves and making joints. One particular machine worth installing is the tube bevelling, grinding and buffing machine made by a well-known rubber
machinery manufacturing firm. It is capable of all three operations, does not take up much room, and is not too expensive. Rubber machine makers would also probably supply polished steel mandrils for inner tubes, but as previously pointed but these are too heavy for handling, aluminium is far more suitable for the purpe mentioned. With regard to the pump for blowing up the tubes, this we think would facilitate matters if it were driven by a small electric motor, fitted with a pressure gauge,
registering up to, say 100 lb. per square inch. The presence of any grit, dust or dirt in the compound will certainly be very detrimental to the finished tubes, and precautions should be taken up to seet that the operations are carried out under clean conditions. All tables and benches should be covered with zinc or aluminium sheet in order to prevent wood splinters, etc., from entering the compound.

Aluminum alloy wheels and wheel covers have the advantage of low weight and high degree of corrosion-resistance. It is the high time to boost-up this substitution because on one hand the availability of aluminum is assured as its raw material while on the other hand, the automobile industry has started looking-up after a long recessionary stretch.
PUBLISHER: ENGINEERS INDIA RESEARCH INSTITUTE (EIRI), An experienced industrial consultants working over 35 years and heve published over 175 technology publications

But, aluminium alloy wheels are more readily acceptable due to the interests in manufacturing fuel-efficient auto-vehicles.

Various incentives and concessions offered by the government to Rs. 12,000 crore automobile industry has succeeded in bringing the industry back to track. Automobile market has picked-up its demand. Maruti’s new car for exports to Europe and new tie-ups by other car manufacturers have given a new dynamism to Indian automobile industry. Tatas have promised to put India-made Mercedes on roads along with other foreign models. Reputed foreign automobile companies are entering into tie-ups with indian firms for manufacturing vehicles, in the country. Hindustan Motors will set-up a joint venture with General Motors of USA for manufacturing cars.

Similarly, Premier Automobiles Ltd. (PAL) is undergoing collaboration with French firm Peugeot to manufacture a range of motor cars, in India. According to a report, the French car manufacturing companies of repute are trying to make India their manufacturing base.

All these significant changes indicate that there will be an all round quality consciousness in the country in future.

Recently, Indian auto-ancillary industry has been plagued by problems of increase in the manufacture f spurious parts. Out of the total manufacture of auto-parts worth Rs. 3,500 crore, India exported Rs. 375 crore, to Dacwoo Motor Corporation (S. Korea), Lana Corporation (USA), and DAF (Holland), etc.

LCVs industry showed over 58% growth, despite the tight money markets, low depreciation rates and shift in the corporate purchase period. India produces cars (0.2 mm nos.), trucks (0.1 mm nos.) 6T GVW (0.10 mn nos.), and 2-wheelers (1.7 mn nos.) totaling 2 million nos. which is 3% of the world automobile vehicles production.

This scenario is felt the best for in introducing aluminium alloy wheels for auto vehicles.

AUTOMOBILE INDUSTRY IN INDIA

Government Initiatives

The Government of India plans to introduce fuel-efficiency ratings for automobiles to encourage sale of cars that consume less petrol or diesel, per Mr Veerappa Moily, Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Government of India.

The Union Budget 2013-14 added some incentives to the industry. The analysis by Deloitte on the Union Budget highlighted the following points:

• The period of concession available for specified part of electric and hybrid vehicles till April 2013 has been extended upto March 31, 2015

• The basic customs duty (BCD) on imported luxury goods such as high-end motor vehicles, motor cycles, yachts and similar vessels was increased. The duty was raised from 75 per cent to 100 per cent on cars/ motor vehicles (irrespective of engine capacity) with CIF value more than US$ 40,000; from 60 per cent to 75 per cent on motorcycles with engine capacity of 800 cc or more and on yachts and similar vessels from 10 per cent to 25 per cent

• In addition, an increase in excise duty from 27 to 30 per cent has been allowed for SUVs with engine capacity exceeding 1,500 cc, while excise duty was decreased from 80 to 72 per cent, in case of SUVs registered solely to be used for taxi purposes

• An exemption from BCD on lithium ion automotive battery for manufacture of lithium ion battery packs for supply to manufacturers of hybrid and electric vehicles

• The excise duty on chassis of diesel motor vehicles for transport of goods reduced from 14 per cent to 13 per cent

The Government of India allows 100 per cent FDI in the automotive industry through automatic route. The Government also plans to accelerate the supply of electric vehicles over the next eight years. It is expected that there will be a demand for 5-7 million electricity-operated vehicles by 2020.

With special focus on exports of small cars, MUVs, two & three wheelers and auto components; the automotive sector’s contribution to the gross domestic product (GDP) is expected to double reaching a turnover worth US$ 145 billion in 2016, according to the Automotive Mission Plan (AMP) 2006-2016.

Automotive alternators require a voltage regulator which operates by modulating the small field current in order to produce a constant voltage at the battery terminals. Early designs (c.1960s-1970s) used a discrete device mounted elsewhere in the vehicle. Intermediate designs (c.1970s-1990s) incorporated the voltage regulator into the alternator housing. Modern designs do away with the voltage regulator altogether; voltage regulation is now a function of the electronic control unit (ECU). The field current is much smaller than the output current of the alternator; for example, a 70 A alternator may need only 7 A of field current. The field current is supplied to the rotor windings by slip rings. The low current and relatively smooth slip rings ensure greater reliability and longer life than that obtained by a DC generator with its commutator and higher current being passed through its brushes.

These outstanding pigment properties led to the currection of certain undesirable properties such as crystallization and flocculation that were associated with the first attempts to use phthalocyanine blue pigments.

The forging industry, as it is known today, makes use of various types of forging equipment for the practical duplication of forged parts for commercial services such forging equipment includes the drop hammer, the trip and halve hammer, the forging machine (upsetter), the mechanical and hydraulic forging press, and the single and double frame general forging hammers. This industry with the present mechanical equipment is primarily a development of our modern times and its status as such extends back less than one hundred years. The background of the forging of metal, however, reaches as far back as civilization itself and practically every historic record gives evidence of the importance the forging of metal held in the life of every people of every era. Museum offer visible proof that the forger has been at work throughout the year in very commendable manner. Just when and where the art of forging came into use, history is not able to define very clearly. It can probably be deduced from the bit of facts gleaned from the bit of facts gleaned from legends, records, and relics that the forgin art was long in use before there existed written records. Iron was doubtlessly used first in Western Asia, the birth place of the human race, and in the surround regions.

Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer Rubber, also named as EPDM in short, is the polymer of ethylene and propylene. Large scale commercial production began in 1963 and the current overall global consumption of EFPM are 800,000 tons per year. EPDM is polyolefine - catergorised and has excellent performance of vulcanization and its gravity is the lowest among all rubbers. These are radon copolymers of the two hydrocarbons ethylene and propylene with the ethylene varying from 40 to 70% by weight. This produces a saturated rubber, EPM, which has to be vulcanised with peroxide systems. Small quantities of a third monomer are, therefore added to produce ethylene-propylene terpolymers (EPDM) which can be vulcanised with sulphur in the usual way. Both types ave outstanding resistance to sunlight, ozone and all forms of aging and weathering; together with a capacity to accept large loadings of extender oil and fillers without undue loss of physical properties. So far, their use in tyres has been limited mainly due to processing difficulties, although blends with up to 20% of EPDM have been successfully adopted by some manufacturers, particularly for sidewalls. Recent developments indicate more extensive use of EPDM in tyres. Non-tyre applications for EPDM include automobile components, roller coverings, acid hose, general building applications, reservoir linings and roofing sheet. Another important application for EPM and EPDM is in electric cable insulation.
