Green house are frequently used to control or modify the exciting enviornmental factor which effects the plant growth. If the enviornmental parameter are controlled, crops can be produced for specific market dates and the quality maintained by eliminating many of the variation and hazards associated with weather Temperature can be regulated with varying degree of precision damage from wind and rain are avoided. Secondly the injury from plant diseases and insect is reduced but not completely eliminated.

We import fruits, vegetables, and fresh flowers from overseas countries and pay them very good amount. If we grow these flowers, vegetables & fruits in our country with the help of modern techniques (Green House technique), we can earn good amount of money, so this modern technique like greenhouse farming will improve the living standard of our Indian farmers. We can save huge amount in USD.

Greenhouse, also known as glasshouse, building designed for the protection of out-of-season plants against excessive cold or heat. As glass became cheaper and as more sophisticated forms of heating became available, the greenhouse evolved into a roofed and walled structure built of glass with a minimal wooden or metal skeleton.

Now-a days greenhouse is more-or-less a glass- or plastic-enclosed framed structure that is used for the production of fruits, vegetables, flowers, and any other plants that require special conditions of temperature. Green House industry is having a great demand in India. India exports most of the flowers and vegetables grown by Green house to the many countries. The basic structural forms are the span-type greenhouse, which has a double-sloped, or A-shaped, roof, and the lean-to greenhouse, which has only one roof slope and leans against the side of a building. Two or more span-type greenhouses are sometimes joined side by side so that they have fewer external walls, and heating costs are consequently less.

Agriculture is the backbone of India’s economic activity and our experience during the last 50 years has demonstrated the strong correlation between agricultural growth and economic prosperity. The present agricultural scenario is a mix of outstanding achievements and missed opportunities. If India has to emerge as an economic power in the world, our agricultural productivity should equal those countries, which are currently rated as economic power of the world. We need a new and effective technology which can improve continuously the productivity, profitability, sustainability of our major farming systems. One such technology is the green house technology. Although it is centuries old, it is
new to India.

Greenhouse Technology

Growing plants is both an art and a science. About 95% of plants, either food crops or cash crops are grown in open field. Since time immemorial, man has learnt how to grow plants under natural environmental conditions. In some of the temperate regions where the climatic conditions are extremely adverse and no crops can be grown, man has developed methods of growing some high value crop continuously by providing protection from the excessive cold, which is called as Greenhouse Technology. So, Greenhouse Technology is the technique of providing favourable environment condition to the plants. It is rather used to protect the plants from the adverse climatic conditions such as wind, cold, precipitation, excessive radiation, extreme temperature, insects and diseases. It is also of vital importance to create an ideal micro climate around the plants. This is possible by erecting a greenhouse / glass house, where the environmental conditions are so modified that one can grow any plant in any place at any time by providing suitable environmental conditions with minimum labour.

India has witnessed an increase in food grain production from 51 million tones (50’s) to 206 million tonnes at the turn of the century and that has helped in achieving self sufficiency. However, quick shrinking of the agricultural land threatens sustainable production of food grains and its ability to feed ever growing mouths. In this context, careful tailoring of soil and crop management practices suitable to local needs is of great importance to keep up the pace of production. Precision Farming otherwise called prescription farming or site-specific farming helps to overcome these constraints by accurately assessing the variability of crop production practices in space-time continuum by utilizing tools like Global Positioning System (GPS), Geographical Information System (GIS), Remote Sensing (RS) and Sensors.

Capsicum in its various colours is one of the most popular vegetables in Europe, America and Middle East. Production of capsicums so far is mostly confined to a few European nations with Spain, Italy and Netherlands in the lead. The major importers of capsicums in its red and yellow hues are Germany, Netherlands, UK and Middle East countries.

In India, cultivation of flowers and vegetables under green house is of recent origin. Presently, most of the units are centred on production of cut-flowers for export and hybrid vegetables seed production. However, for the last two years, about 70 to 80 small scale units ranging from 500 sq. meters to 8000 sq meters green house area have come up around Sangli and Kolhapur districts of Maharashtra for production of coloured capsicum. Most Of these units are found to be doing well both in production and marketing.
