Plasticizers are additives that increase the plasticity or fluidity of the material to which they are added, including plastics, cement, concrete, wallboard and clay bodies. Although the same compounds are often used for both plastics and concretes, the desired effect is slightly different. Plasticizers for plastics are additives, most commonly phthalates, that give hard plastics the desired flexibility and durability.

Phthalates are widely used as additives in a range of plastics and other materials that are found in many consumer products. They make plastics, such as PVC, soft and flexible. They are not chemically bound to plastics, so they can be released from consumer products into the environment. There is public concern about phthalates because of their widespread use and occurrence in the environment as well as their potential effects on human health.

There is a wide range of different phthalates, which each have specific properties, uses, and health effects. In the European Union, five of the most widely used phthalates have been reviewed by the European Chemicals Bureau (DEHP, DBP, DINP, DIDP, and BBP).

Plasticizers have been found to be used largely by vinyl industry, where they improve process ability of resins and enhance the properties of the end product. The first successful use of end product. The first successful use of a plasticizer in the preparation of a plastic, however, was long before the development of polyvinyl chloride. When the Hyatt brothers used camphor to plasticizer nitrocellulose, about 1868 and thereby brought celluloid into existence the invention marked the beginning of both the plastics and the plasticizer industries. Camphor was replaced by tripheniyl phosphate after some years and a little later trieresyl phosphate was also used with nitrocellulose. In the early 1920's phthalates were introduced but the demand for plasticizers remained small, limited largely by its dependence on the market for cellulose nitrate plastics.

Most plasticizers are non volatile organic materials, usually liquid in form when added to resins under the proper conditions, they produce compounds that are more flexible than the employed to impart certain other characteristics. Many different types of chemical compounds have commercial usefulness as plasticizers. Some of the more common types are.
