Carboxy Methyl Cellulose, a chemical of demonstrated
usefullness in scores of applications and of suggested
applicability in hundreds, nevertheless required several decades
to attain genuine industrial status. The product was first
developed in Germany toward the end of World War I by Jansen, but
it was until the late 1930’s and particularly during and since
world War II. that large scale uses began to energe & commercial
production appeared justified.
Following the appearance of a report, the detergency improving characteristics of SCMC were confirmed in laboratory tests. Extensive investigations were under taken by research groups with a view toward developing a CMC with the high grade soaps and synthetic detergents already available on the market. At the same time production methods were subjected to scruting. CMC had received the impetus necessary for the launching of a new Industrial Chemical, & a start had been made toward the development of a process for its manufacture.
