The fluorescent lamp is also a gaseous discharge lamp,  The CFL industry is a profitable industry, however the LED bulbs and tube products have taken up the CFL products but still it exists good market as the cost of the CFL is much cheaper than LED products (Tubes, Bulbs etc), the `gas’ being actually mercury vapour at low pressure. A large part of the light emitted (LED) by this discharge, however, falls in  ultra-violet  part of the spectrum and thus invisible; apart  of  this, glass will not transmit ultra-violet rays to any extent. So  that very  little  passes through to the outside of the  envelope. The Indian LED lighting industry is expected to grow rapidly, even over the long term, on account of the great demand for a smart, connected lifestyle and for energy-efficient products.  India, the second most populous country in world and 5th major electricity consumer, has been determined an ever-widening demand-supply gap in electricity. In order  to arrive at a really efficient and economical  source  of light,  the   principle  of  fluorescence  was   introduced;   by fluorescence is meant the phenomenon arising from the capacity of certain  substances for absorbing short-wave radiations  and  re-emitting  them  as  radiations of a  longer  wavelength.  If  for convenience  we  refer to the emissions just beyond the  red  and blue  extremities of the spectrum by somewhat para  doxical  term “invisible light.

In  practice this transformation is brought about by a layer of powdered material applied to the inside of the glass  envelops of  the Lamp; under normal conditions these powders appear to  be white.  This powder is fully irradiated by the ultra-violet  rays emitted  by the gas under the influence of the electric  current, and this, very briefly, is the principle on which the fluorescent lamp works.
